Do Viral Skincare Trends Really Work?

Every few months, a new skincare hack takes over Instagram, or YouTube. From icing your face every morning to applying sunscreen only in “highlight” areas, these trends look impressive in short videos. But do they actually deliver results?

Let’s explore a few popular ones and see what the science says.

Skin Icing
Supporters of skin icing believe it reduces puffiness, tightens pores, and creates an instant glow. Cold temperatures can help reduce temporary swelling by constricting blood vessels, so you may look fresher for a short time. However, it is not a long-term solution for skin firmness or pore size. If you enjoy the sensation and boost, it is generally safe to try, but avoid placing ice directly on the skin to prevent irritation.

Slugging
Slugging is a technique from Korean beauty routines that involves sealing your nighttime skincare with a thick layer of petrolatum to lock in moisture. This works particularly well for dry or damaged skin barriers because petrolatum is an excellent occlusive. However, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, the heavy layer may clog pores. It is best used sparingly or only in dry weather conditions.

Sunscreen Contouring
This trend involves applying sunscreen only to certain areas of the face to create a “natural contour” from tanning. Dermatologists strongly advise against this because UV damage is cumulative. Unprotected skin will age faster and the risk of skin cancer will increase. A safer choice is to apply sunscreen evenly to the entire face and use makeup or bronzer for contouring.

DIY Lemon or Baking Soda Masks
Social media often promotes “kitchen skincare,” but ingredients like lemon juice and baking soda can disrupt your skin’s natural pH and cause irritation or long-term damage. While you might notice an immediate brightening effect, the potential harm outweighs the short-lived benefit. It is better to use products specifically formulated and tested for facial skin.

Should You Try Viral Skincare Trends?
Some trends are harmless and can be enjoyable to try, but many deliver only temporary results or carry hidden risks. Before experimenting, check whether the method is dermatologist-approved, consider your skin type, and remember that a consistent, balanced skincare routine will always outperform quick fixes.

The conclusion is simple. Social media can provide inspiration, but your skin deserves more than a fleeting trend. While fads come and go, healthy and protected skin will always be in style.
